When the Light I Was Hiding Turned Out to Be the Gift

This reflection began with a simple question — what does it really mean to let my light shine? The deeper I sat with it, the more I realized the answer wasn't just about scripture. It was about me — someone who had been carrying everything in my head for years, afraid to speak up, afraid to be seen — and what happened when I finally laid the burden down and picked up a pen instead.

God is awesome! He has a way of answering questions I didn't even know I was asking.

Raw Experience

A good friend used to tell me — write it out on paper. It worked for her. I never really tried it.

My season of rebuilding came. I was creating a new life from the inside out and I needed somewhere to put all of it — the discoveries, the questions, the things I was afraid I'd forget if I didn't capture them. My mind was full. Chaotic. So I started writing. Not because I loved it. Not because I thought I was a writer. Just because I needed somewhere to lay it all down so my mind could finally rest.

What I didn't expect was what happened next.

My journal became a container for every thought I had been carrying alone. A place to refer back to. A place where I didn't have to keep everything organized in my head — I could just be. And somewhere in that quiet act of simply trying it, something shifted. The burden lifted. The chaos settled. I began to love this honest kind. The kind where no one is grading you and nothing has to be perfect and the only audience is God and me.

I didn't find writing. Writing found me — when I was finally still enough to receive it.

Then something else happened. During recent conversations about my reflections, my aunt said she could see me speaking publicly — sharing these reflections with groups, standing in front of people and speaking the goodness of God out loud.

I almost choked.

Public speaking has been a fear I carried for as long as I can remember. I avoided speech classes in school. Talked my way out of presentations when I could. The idea of standing in front of a room of people and being seen like that — it was the kind of fear that had a seat at every table.

Something moved inside me before I could even respond. A quiet thought rose up —

If someone else believes in me, why don't I believe in myself?

Then my aunt said something that stopped me completely. "I can't tell. The way you speak right now is beautifully spoken."

I felt honored. And something that had been locked quietly behind the fear cracked open just enough to let a little light through.

Internal Alignment

Today's question was what does it really mean to let my light shine? I felt so happy researching this because the answer brought clarity to everything that had been unfolding this week. Matthew 5:16 tells me that God is calling me to let the results of the inner work be seen — to show people His love and His hope, to share the unique gifts He has placed in me, not to perform or impress, but to guide others rather than hiding my best self away.

And I had to ask myself honestly — what had I been hiding?

A voice. A gift for words I didn't know I had. A boldness that was always there underneath the fear, waiting for love to unlock it.

Because that is what changed everything. Not a method. Not a strategy. Not a decision I made on willpower alone.

Love.

Accepting that God loves me — really loves me, personally, in the mess and the ordinary and the unfinished — gave me permission to love myself! And that love walked straight into every room where fear used to live and began rearranging the furniture. I am more outspoken now. Bolder — but in the right way, the grounded way. I say what needs to be said. I do what needs to be done. I no longer keep quiet out of fear.

For fear is no longer a shadow that will dim or block my light for my life's and God's purpose.

This is my freedom. The kind God always meant for me to be walking in.

If letting my light shine means one day standing in front of a room full of people — terrified, imperfect, heart pounding — and telling them about the goodness of God and the importance of aligning with Him, so that they too can find their way to their freedom. Then I will do it.

Scripture on My Heart

"Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." — Matthew 5:16 NIV

Turning Point

I came looking for the meaning of a verse and God used it to show me what had already been growing inside me all along. The light was never missing. It was just waiting for me to unbury it and stop being afraid of it.

I have done the work. I have felt the fear. I have sat in the dark and found God there. I know what I just agreed to. The fear is still there. I said it anyway. And I meant it.

Pause & Reflect

If this mirrors something in your life, you don't have to name it right now. Just allow yourself to sit with the truth of it…

…and know that the fear you feel is not a stop sign. It is proof that something in you is ready to grow. You are not alone in it — you have me walking beside you, and most of all you have the God who placed that courage inside of you. He has not left. He is just waiting for you to unbury what He already put there and walk in the freedom He always meant for you.

— Thank you Jesus —

I Love you, Lord!

I Love me!
